CEO Message - Science Center

Stephen TangVisitors to the Science Center’s campus have no doubt noticed a flurry of street construction activity. It’s all part of the $4 million Market Street phase of the City of Philadelphia’s ReStore Philadelphia Corridors Project, which began November 1.

When the project is complete in early summer 2010, Market Street from 34th to 41st Streets will be transformed with new trees, sidewalks, benches, trash receptacles, bicycle lanes, improved pedestrian lighting and crosswalks. It’s all part of our strategy to make this section of the Avenue of Technology an inviting place to work, live and play.

Not only will this project improve the look, feel and safety of Market Street, but it will also boost the image of Philadelphia by providing a more conducive environment to attract high-quality research institutes and private companies to locate here.

We understand that along with construction comes inconvenience. Here’s what to expect:
• Sidewalks will be demolished in preparation for new concrete, amenity strips and bump outs. Please use caution  when walking and/or driving in the affected areas.
• Some portions of the project will be noisy.
• Parking along Market Street will not be permitted during several phases of the project.
• Some trees may be removed to conform with City codes and the overall design plan. When the project is   complete, however, more than 70 new trees will be planted.
• Lunch trucks will move to the opposite side of Market Street as their blocks are affected.
• LUCY service will continue throughout the project.

We ask for your patience as the project continues. We believe the end result will be worth the short-term inconvenience.
