At uCity Square, the first signs of spring weather mean one thing - lunch on the Plaza. Innovation Plaza, that is. This pocket-park located along the 37th Street walkway between Market and Chestnut Streets is a gathering space for uCity Square employees, residents, and the surrounding West Philadelphia community. Innovation Plaza is the product of a collaboration between seven partners whose missions and focus vary as much as the weather. Despite their different missions, the Science Center, International House Philadelphia, National Board of Medical Examiners, PECO, University Lutheran Church and the 3624 Condominium Association share a common goal: ensure Innovation Plaza is an open, welcoming and unique environment.
You may know Innovation Plaza by its unique red portals and festival lighting. Exit, the design firm responsible for Innovation Plaza, used the golden ratio as its guiding design principle. The golden ratio is an underlying structure found in nature that has been a source of inspiration for architects, designers, engineers, mathematicians and artists.
Ex;it integrated the golden ratio into the Plaza’s landscape, digital portals, and signage. Walking through the red-lit portals evokes an invitation into the future, celebrating the convergence of community and innovation that exists at uCity Square.
Since activating this space, our community has celebrated several milestones on the Plaza. We launched the Innovators Walk of Fame, gazed up at the 2017 Solar Eclipse, and celebrated the Science Center’s partnership with CIC and Venture Cafe. Last year, we partnered with Greensgrow Farms to offer a weekly farmshare pickup on the Plaza.
Lucky for us, Greensgrow will be back on Innovation Plaza this year from June through November! You can sign up for your farm share package now, and start picking up your locally-grown produce during the first week of June.
